Ukrainian Diaspora Olympiad and Youth Rally - 2008

      The event organizing committee met on June 2, 2007 at the Ukrainian American Sport Center (“Tryzubiwka”), located in Horsham, PA. Tryzub president, Ihor Chyzowych, called the meeting to order. Mr. Chyzowych also chaired the committees that organized and executed the last three Ukrainian Diaspora Olympiads, held in the Philadelphia area in 1988, 1995, and 2000.

Representatives of the Ukrainian American Sport Center “Tryzub”, the Ukrainian Sports Club “Chornomorska Sitch” (Whippany, New Jersey), the Ukrainian Sports Commission of America and Canada “USCAK”, and the newly organized Ukrainian Sports Club “Ukraina” from Syracuse, New York attended the meeting.

Ihor Chyzowych proposed a call to all Ukrainian athletes to gather for the next diaspora Olympiad. The attendees voted to hold the next Ukrainian Diaspora Olympiad and Youth Rally during the 4th of July, 2008 U.S. Independence holiday weekend. Competition will begin on Friday, July 4, 2008, and will progress through the rest of the weekend. Opening ceremonies will be held, on Saturday July 5, 2008.

The committee agreed to hold competitions in the following sports:

·         Soccer ( Men’s, Over 35, Boys, and Girls )

·         Volleyball ( Men’s, Boys’, Women’s, and Girls’)

·         Tennis( Men’s, Boys’, Women’s, and Girls’)

·         Golf ( Men’s and Women’s)- 2 round individual and team formats

·         Swimming ( Men’s, Boys’, Women’s, and Girls’)

·         Chess ( Open Competition)

·         Track and Field( Boys’ and Girls’)

·         Table Tennis( Men’s and Women’s)

 

The committee also resolved that the current USCAK individual sport directors in tandem with local Philadelphia area counterparts would chair the various sporting events. The committee appointed the following people:

·         Soccer    - Gene Chyzowych, Danylo Nysch, and Mike Jurchak

·         Volleyball      - Myron Bytz  and Halia  DeVasalle

·         Golf               - Joe Homick and  the Tryzub golf committee

·         Tennis           - George Sawchak and the Tryzub tennis committee

·         Swimming     - Maria Bokalo and Christina Tershakovec

·         Track and Field  - open

·         Table Tennis      - open

 

The competition will be held at the Ukrainian American Sport Center” Tryzub”’s fields in Horsham, Pa., and at other venues in the surrounding area.

Moreover, the Olympic Committee resolved to hold various cultural, artistic and recreational events during the weekend: opening and closing ceremonies, outdoor concerts, Zabava dances and a banquet. The weekend will be dedicated not only to sports but to a rally of Ukrainian youth.

The organizing committee also appointed a steering committee to develop and to implement the event. The participants elected the following 2008 Olympiad Committee:

·         Chairman- Ihor Chyzowych

·         Vice Chairman of Operations- Orest Lesiuk

·         Director of Finance- Adrian Hawryliw

·         Director of Marketing- Ihor Chenstuch

·         Marketing Manager- Halyna Dubil

·         Director of Competition- open

·         Press Secretaries (Ukrainian media) – Metodyj Boretskyj and Omelan Twardowsky

·         Press Secretary (American media)- Tamara Cornelison

·         The above-named Sports Directors

·         Artistic Coordinator- Taras Lewitsky

 

Based on the discussions, the steering committee decided to write an article to inform the Ukrainian communities in the United States and Canada about the planned 2008 Olympiad.. Myron Stebelsky informed the new steering committee that an impressive number of  new sports clubs have emerged in the U.S. and Canada. They have all expressed a desire to participate in their first Olympiad. A questionnaire will be sent to all Ukrainian Sports Clubs and Youth Organizations, requesting cogent information and input.
