Durbak wins Tryzub's Tennis Tournament

     Ivan Durbak from Ramsey, NJ, a five time men's Ukrainian American and Canadian (USCAK ) champion added another victory to his already impressive tennis accomplishments by winning this year's USO Tryzub's Sixteenth Annual Spring Tennis Tournament. Held at Tryzubiwka, Horsham, PA during the weekend of3-4 of May, the tournament was contested in men's singles competition only with a feed-in division.

     To win the tournament, Durbak had to defeat three former Tryzubiwka champions. In the quarterfinals he beat Jerry Tymkiw 6-4, 6-2; in the semifinals, Steven Sosiak 6-1, 6-3; and in the finals, another USCAK champion, George Sawchak 6-2,  6-2.

Sawchak reached the final round with a 6-3, 6-2 semifinal win over last year's champion Pavlo Rehulyk and a 6-2, 6-1 quarterfinal win over Bohdan Krawtschuk. Rehulyk, in the quarterfinal round eliminated ever dangerous Ihor Buhaj in a long three set match 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Steven Sosiak won the feed-in bracket and thus received a third place in the tournament.

In the final round of this division Sosiak eked out a victory over Rehulyk 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. In the semifinals Sosiak defeated Buhaj and Rehulyk, Tymkiw by a pro-set scores of 10-6 and 10-2 respectively. Other noted matches in this bracket were Boris Tatunchak's victory over Krawtschuk and Walter Dziwak's win over Alex Olynec both by the score of 10-8.

At the conclusion of the tournament trophies were presented to the winner, finalist, and feed-in finalists.

The next Ukrainian tennis tournament will be held at Soyuzivka, UNA Estate in Kerhonkson, NY during the 4th of July weekend. Known as USCAK-East Tournament, the competition will be in singles, doubles and mixed doubles groups. Advanced registration is required. For more information contact G. Sawchak at 215-576- 7989.
