Tribute to Two American Heroes: Bobby Pietrangelo and Corey Nawrocki

By Taras Lewyckyj (Read by Col. Robert DeSousa at the Festival, August 25 2025

Today, as we celebrate Ukraine’s independence, we pause not only to honor a nation's freedom—but also to remember two extraordinary American heroes whose courage transcended borders, whose sacrifice binds our communities in shared struggle, and whose memory inspires us to stand ever more firmly for liberty, justice, and peace.

Bobby Pietrangelo, just 23 years old, left the safety of his home in Hilltown, Pennsylvania, because he could not look away. “How can you sit here,” he told his mother, “When it’s happening over there and not do anything about it?” First as a humanitarian volunteer and later as a combat medic and soldier, Bobby gave everything to help defend Ukraine against Russia’s brutal and unprovoked invasion. He was decorated for bravery under fire, survived multiple deployments to the front lines, and never wavered in his devotion to his comrades—even when facing overwhelming odds. Bobby died in the trenches near Pokrovsk in January 2025, fighting beside his best friend. His remains have not yet returned home, but his spirit lives on in every act of compassion, in every stand for freedom, and in every Christmas light, for he loved that season most of all.

Corey Nawrocki, 41, of Lansdale, was a decorated U.S. Marine who had already given decades of valorous service to his country. A two-time Purple Heart recipient, a Bronze Star honoree, and a respected leader in the Marine Corps, Corey might have chosen a quieter life after retirement. Instead, he answered a higher call. Volunteering with Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Corey was killed in action during a dangerous reconnaissance mission in the Bryansk region in October 2024. Known as “Fat Stacks” to his fellow Marines, Corey was not only a formidable soldier, but a mentor, a friend, a patriot in the truest sense. He returned home with honor and was welcomed with the love and reverence of his entire community.

On behalf of the Ukrainian American community, we dedicate this festival to Bobby and Corey—two sons of Pennsylvania, two defenders of freedom, two beacons of the best of American values.

To the wounded Ukrainian soldiers among us today: know that your sacrifices are not forgotten, and that Americans like Bobby and Corey stood beside you not because they had to—but because they believed in you.

To the Ukrainian women and children who’ve sought refuge in America while your loved ones fight to defend Ukraine: know that you are not alone. The compassion and courage of these two American warriors reflect a deep bond between our peoples.

And to our fellow Americans, elected officials, clergy, and neighbors: let us remember what Bobby and Corey remind us—that freedom is never free. It is defended by the brave, honored by the grateful, and advanced by the just.

And most especially, to the families and childhood friends of Bobby and Corey who are with us here today—please accept our deepest gratitude and love. We cannot imagine the weight of your loss, but we hope you feel the embrace of this community that now carries their memory with you. Their sacrifice was not in vain, and their legacy is now part of something far greater than any of us. We honor you, as we honor them.

Their legacy is now part of ours.

Their sacrifice is now part of Ukraine’s fight.

And their names—Bobby Pietrangelo and Corey Nawrocki—will be remembered, with reverence and with love, for generations to come.

Вічна їм пам’ять. Eternal Memory. Glory to the Heroes.
